According to the Associated Press, the International Olympic Committee is open to discussions with FIFA to avoid a major date conflict for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and the 2022 World Cup of Soccer.
Why? Well, that is because there is the chance that the 2022 World Cup of Soccer will be moved from the summer to the winter in Qatar so the elite football players in the world won't have to play in extreme heat.
But, according to International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, the IOC is not extremely eager to change their Olympic dates away from the period between the last week of January and the last week of February.
Right now it looks like if FIFA starts the World Cup within the first two weeks of January, there should be no scheduling conflict. It would just be that as soon as the World Cup is over, the Winter Olympic Games will start. My question is does the international sports landscape have the appetite for two major sports competitions on the world stage to exist so close together?
I suggest the answer is no. It would make the most sense if one of these two major events was moved to November, a month that is generally quiet when it comes to international sporting events.
