Street Corner Symphony fell just short of the season two title on “The Sing-Off” Monday night.
Friends and family gathered at the Alabama Wing House in Atmore rooting on the six-person ensemble, which Lottie native Adam Chance Ray is a member, as it aired from Los Angeles on NBC. His parents, Glenn and Kristi Ray, were in California to watch their son perform live.
“We really enjoyed it,” Kristi Ray said Tuesday while waiting on a flight at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. “It was an experience. All of the groups were fantastic. Adam and the group was disappointed, but they have had people talk to them about their future, so that excites them. The show was really great.”
Adam’s father, Glenn, was equally excited for his son.
“We hated to see them lose, it was heart-breaking,” he said. “I don’t think they are too disappointed with losing because they are not locked into the year contract with Sony. They think a lot of good things are going to come out of this. We appreciate everyone supporting them and voting for them.”
Street Corner Symphony had several once in a lifetime experiences while on the show including performing with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Neil Diamond and Ben Folds of the alternative band Ben Fold Five Monday night. Folds also served as a judge along with Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.
“Seeing Adam on stage performing was awesome,” Kristi Ray said. “He made me and his father proud. That was his dream. He said it was a lifetime experience.”
The Nashville-based group wowed viewers and the judges with their a cappella version of Cold Play’s “Fix You,” and host Nick Lachey described the group as having “Southern Charm,” but it was not enough as Committed, a gospel choir from Huntsville, claimed the title. With its win, Committed claimed the $100,000 prize and a Sony recording contract.
Adam Chance will be coming home later this week to spend the holidays with his family.
“It will be fantastic to have him home,” Kristi Ray said. “He hasn’t been home in several months. He’ll have some time to rest because they worked so hard on the show and put in long hours each day. They had rehearsals all the time.”
Adam Ray also has his own band, “The Last Great Fiction,” which he composes and writes the songs/music, plays the guitar and is the lead singer. He also plays the piano, banjo, mandolin and writes and performs Folk music.
In addition, NBC has produced a CD that was released at Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart on Tuesday, Nov. 30 called The Sing-Off-Harmonies for the Holidays. The Street Corner Symphony sings Auld Lang Syne on the CD.
Each of the 10 groups on the show has one song featured on the CD.
