CBS Remains Top Network, 'Dancing' Top Show

However, 'NCIS' is not too far behind from taking overall season crown by MICHAEL HINMAN , Posted Dec-26-2010 Add a comment

There's no surprise on what is sitting at the top of the ratings.

Blame it on Bristol Palin. Or just television audience's desire to see D-list celebrities dance. But ABC won the fall with "Dancing With the Stars," thanks to a 15 percent jump in ratings, sending it right past "NCIS," which wasn't too far behind for CBS.

CBS continues to be the kind of primetime, however. It earned a 7.2 rating/12 share in a week-by-week average of overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. It had a clear lead over ABC, which stumbled in December to earn a 6.2/10.

NBC pulled out a third place win, mostly because of a strong "Sing-Off" in December. Its schedule, however, is in big trouble. Many of its freshman series like "The Event" aren't expected to return, while others like "Outlaw" barely made it three episodes before being yanked.

Fox finished in fourth with a 3.8/6, but it will easily move up when "American Idol" returns. But yet "American Idol" remains a big question mark going into the spring. With all but one judge gone, including star Simon Cowell, how will a revamped show do in the ratings?

Most predictions are that "American Idol" will start strong. But if the program doesn't do something to capture the heart of viewers, the novelty of the new judges will wear off quickly, a la Ellen DeGeneres last season, and the show could be very vulnerable to losing the No. 1 slot it has held for the last several years.

CBS' new shows broke into the top 15 for the fall, led by "Mike & Molly" but followed closely by "Hawaii Five-0" and "$#*! My Dad Says." The networks are breaking out even more new shows at mid-season, so it will be interesting to see how this race shakes out.

Can CBS hold out for another win? Only time will tell.
