Daily Republican Register: Local Sports - Aces fall to North Knox in Toyota Tournament

PRINCETON, Ind. - For a few moments it looked as if the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces basketball team was going to post a win, its first of the season.

The Aces trailed the North Knox Warriors, 28-25, with 5:23 left in the game.

But the Aces' shooting touch, which was dismal at best, left them almost completely; they scored only four more points while the Warriors added 11 for a 39-29 win as the 2010 Toyota Teamwork Classic went into its third day of Pool Play.

The win kept the Aces winless and sent them into the 7th-place game at Oakland City University today (Thursday) at 12:45 p.m.

Mt. Carmel led, 4-0, as Brandon Carpenter scored after taking a feed from Alex Hale, who had rebounded a missed shot. Beau Grant then added a shot.

North Knox tied it on two Richard Gugliotta free throws and a bucket by Derek Chambers. Gugliotta's 10-footer gave North Knox the lead. Hale tied it at 6-6 and that's the way the first quarter ended.

The Warriors extended their lead to 10-6 early in the second frame but Austin Anderson hit a trey then Carpenter scored inside. Mt. Carmel led, 11-10, with 5:40 to play in the half.

Gugliotta gave the Warriors a 13-11 lead with a trey, and they never trailed again.

North Knox took a 20-15 halftime lead, and was in front after three quarters, 26-19.

The two teams traded points as the final period opened, then Shawn Bumpus scored twice inside and the Aces were down by only three, 28-25, with 5:23 left.

That's when they went cold.

Aces Coach Ryan Haywood did not know exactly what the team's shooting percentage was, but guessed it was less than 30 percent.

"You can't win many games shooting in the low 20s," he said. "I don't know what we shot yet, but I'm going to guess it was in the low 20s."

"They played a 2-3 zone, packed it in," Haywood said. "Right now, we can't score if we don't get the ball to Shawn Bumpus. It's as simple as that."

"We're going to have to fix that, find some people that can knock down some open threes - we had wide-open looks all game long from three-point range - they were just giving it to us. We weren't knocking them down," he said.

Grant led the Aces with eight points. Bumpus and Carpenter each scored six points for Mt. Carmel. The Aces hit four of eight free throws.

Gugliotta led North Knox with 20. The Warriors hit 11 of 14 free throws for 78.6 percent.
