Premier League - Paper Round: Bye-bye to Bruce? - Yahoo! Eurosport

Steve Bruce is odds-on to become the first Premier League manager to get the sack this season, according to the Daily Express.

The paper claims that Black Cats owner Ellis Short is fast running out of patience with the club's slow start to the season, with the side yet to win in five games.

It would be a major shock to see Bruce leave considering that Short put up the money for 11 summer signings - but the Express claims that "Short is renowned in the corporate world for his unwillingness to accept second best and wants to see an immediate upturn in fortunes".

Sunderland are all over the back pages today, with Asamoah Gyan's loan move from Sunderland to UAE side Al-Ain hitting the headlines as well. The Daily Star reports that the Ghana striker has quadrupled his pay packet from £50,000 a week to £200,000 a week, tax free, by making the move - meaning that he will pocket almost £10 million for his season's work. Gyan is quoted describing the offer as "too good to refuse".

In addition, Sunderland have apparently received a world-record loan fee of £6m for the player, according to the Daily Mail. Such figures always make for giddy reading - so much so that it was with genuine disappointment that we read the Daily Mirror's more sober estimate of £40,000 a week and £1m loan fee.

Fabio Capello has always sworn he'll retire after Euro 2012, but it seems he could be persuaded to change his mind for a huge offer from big-spending Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

The Mail reports that the club - bankrolled by billionaire Suleyman Kerimov - want to talk to the Italian about taking over after next summer's finals.

Whether Capello really needs another job after scooping £6m a year from the FA for the last four years is debatable, but reports last week and at the weekend suggested that Anzhi will pay £22m a year for the right man. Jose Mourinho has apparently rejected an offer already, while Guus Hiddink is rumoured to be mulling one over right now.

The Sun leads its back page on the woes of Fernando Torres, claiming that the misfiring Spanish striker will be dropped for both this week's Champions League clash and Sunday's trip to Old Trafford.

Spurs' on-loan striker Emmanuel Adebayor is said to be pleading with Tottenham to sign him permanently after openly admitting that "the love between City and myself is broken", the Mail reports.

One man who looks guaranteed to leave White Hart Lane is Heurelho Gomes, however, with The Sun reporting that Harry Redknapp has agreed to listen to offers for the Brazilian goalie since Brad Friedel has settled in so well. Gomes is apparently desperate to leave after losing even his place on the bench.

And finally, the Mirror reports that former England star Trevor Steven - a veteran of the 1986 World Cup, as the Panini sticker album buried deep in our loft will testify - had to be hauled from a swollen river on Sunday after diving in to rescue his dog.

Steven apparently held on to the mischievous mutt in the raging torrent while a police helicopter, two fire crews and paramedics arrived at the scene to rescue him.

"I didn’t really have any choice as Mac would have been swept away," said Steven.
