It is set for 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the club in Olde Town Conyers.

CONYERS -- The community can enjoy a relaxing evening of entertainment while supporting one of the most advanced programs in Rockdale County Public Schools.

For the fifth year, the Rockdale Magnet Fund is holding a community event to raise money for the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, but this year, it's a little different from years past.

"The Rockdale Magnet Fund is a non-profit organization which financially supports the (school's) student activities and travel," said Mary Ann Suddeth, director of the school. "We are fortunate to have a dedicated group of parents to organize great fundraisers."

Donations often help cover costs of competition fees, transportation and other materials.

The event, which is called the Magnet Connexion -- A Community Event, will be held at Club 908 at 908 Commercial St. NE in Olde Town Conyers.

"I'm very supportive of a place to go for students who need and seek higher education," said club owner Kip Stewart.

She said the advanced program costs extra to run, so she wants to help support it and its students.

The event is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. It includes an international wine tasting, light hors d'oeuvres and music, including a live jazz/blues group and a DJ so patrons can dance on the disco dance floor.

Although Club 908 is the location of the event, several downtown businesses are planning to bring appetizers to the event, including Whistle Post Tavern, Borage Grill and Celtic Tavern. Wines are donated from Sigman Bottle Shop.

The event also features a silent auction with sports items and memorabilia, cosmetics, jewelry, restaurant gift cards, movies and other donations from businesses around Conyers.

Tickets are available for $30 each in advance by calling 770-483-8737 or visiting www.rockdalemagnetschool.com or $40 each at the door the night of the event. Anyone interested in donating auction items can contact Roland Theodore at roltheo@aol.com or 770-361-1233.
