Orlando Magic big man Dwight Howard is lending his considerable presence to Seminole County’s effort to help homeless and hungry children — and he needs a little crowd support. Howard will be filming a public service announcement for the cause Friday [Sept. 16] at Longwood’s Lyman High School gymnasium, and producers want about 300 “extras” in the background.

The first 300 will make the cut.

If you’re interested in getting up-close but not-too-personal with Howard, one of the most charitable of the NBA ’s superstars, you need to RSVP by emailing Beth Davalos , coordinator for the Seminole County Public Schools’ Families in Transition program. Last year, Davalos worked with almost 1,800 homeless students in that program, trying to make sure they had a roof over their heads, something to eat, transportation to school and school supplies in order to have a shot at succeeding in the classroom. The program also provides tutoring and works toward stability for the families.

The more kids move, the greater their odds of failing and dropping out.

The PSA will be only 30 seconds, but expect filming to last at least an hour. You should arrive at the gym (865 Ronald Reagan Blvd. in Longwood, 32750) between 2:45 and 3 :45 p.m. Producers say you’ll be done by 5. And since this PSA is all about community support, participants are encouraged to wear their outfit from work or, if appropriate, play. (In other words: If your son plays football, have him wear his uniform. If you’re a mail carrier, come in your Postal Service attire. Construction worker? Wear your hard hat. Etc.) Of course, that’s assuming your employer gives permission — although if your boss doesn’t want to be associated with helping homeless kids, you have our sympathy.

Anyway, a few other ground rules:
