Baby bags used to hide stolen goods

CUMMING, Ga. – Baby bags were a popular place to stash shoplifted items, according to two separate Cumming Police incident reports.

About 4 p.m. Sept. 6, Walmart loss prevention staff say they allegedly saw Joseph Hammons and Melissa Tritt, both of Cumming, place items in a baby bag. After paying for some items, the couple exited the store, 1500 Market Place Boulevard in Cumming, without paying for hidden items.

Among the items taken were several DVD discs, a wallet, a bandana, aspirin, Nyquil, an umbrella and other objects. The items taken and then recovered were valued at about $150.

Three days later, about 7 p.m. Sept. 9, Walmart loss prevention again called police after they allegedly caught Brandy Nicholson and Amy Birchfield, both of Cumming, conceal several items in each of their individual baby bags.

The two women left the store without paying for the items, which included a $32 Kidi brand camera; a $14 sweatshirt; a $6.98 wart remover; $3.94 air freshener and $2.88 refills. In total, Birchfield and Nicholson were accused of taking about $400.

In both cases, the suspects were released. The loss prevention officer has the right to take both cases to Forsyth County Municipal Court.
