Sunday picnic will benefit deputy's family

A local restaurant plans to host a benefit Sunday for the family of former Hernando County sheriff's deputy John Mecklenburg, who was killed July 3 during a high-speed chase through Pasco and Hernando counties.

The event will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. at Beef O'Brady's restaurant in the Horse Lake Plaza off the State Road 50 truck route. There will be games and activities, including a bounce house, kids' maze, wall climbing, corn toss tournament, prizes and giveaways.

Honkytonk Hitmen, George Marshall and Downpor will provide live music.

Restaurant general manager Dan Heavrin said proceeds will go to Mecklenburg's widow, Penny, and the couple's two young children.

"It's a loss to the community," he said. "We are community oriented and are just trying to raise money for the family."

Admission is $5 for adults and free for children. Barbecue dinners, which include chicken, ribs and pulled pork, will be served for $10.

In case of rain, the event will be held at the Hernando County Fairgrounds.
