WSOC: Ball State's lone goal holds up

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After returning to the Hefner Soccer Complex after five road matches, an early first half Ball State goal led the Cardinals past the Mastodons, 1-0, on Sunday evening in Fort Wayne.

The 'Dons fall to 2-5-0 in their third-straight 1-0 loss against a MAC opponent. IPFW's two previous losses came against Bowling Green (Sept. 16) and Buffalo (Sept. 11). BSU moves to 5-3-1 overall.

In another highly physical match, there was a total of 39 fouls with five yellow cards and one red card.

The Cardinals set the final score of 1-0 in the first nine minutes of the first half when Jasmine Moses scored off of a breakaway pass from Ellie Chadick to beat IPFW goalkeeper Kristen McFadden for the goal.

With a lot of missed chances, the Mastodons saw seven shots in the first half while the Cardinals had nine.

The 'Dons came out of the locker rooms into the second half with renewed intensity. IPFW freshman Sydney Hoareau came close to scoring for the 'Dons in the 40th minute but the shot went wide while senior Tara O'Toole's shot was saved by BSU goalie Aubrey Buehler in the 35th minute.

IPFW kept knocking on the door in the second half after recording four shots but could not find the board while BSU had many chances for an insurance goal with five shots.

Things started to heat up even more on the field when 23 of the fouls appeared just in the last 45 minutes, including the three yellow cards and the lone red card by the 'Dons.

McFadden recorded five saves while Buehler had three in the net while IPFW outshot BSU 14-11.

Junior Alaina Jones had three shots for the Mastodons while O'Toole had two with one on goal. Underwood and junior teammate Rhea Proctor each had one shot on goal.

The Mastodons will now return to action when they travel to Evansville, Indiana on Saturday. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m. against Evansville.
