Prince William SAT scores outperform national average in reading

Prince William County Schools released the SAT scores for the 2010-11 school year on Wednesday, showing that division students performed closely with the rest of the nation.

The College Board’s report announced that graduating seniors in PWCS who took the college entrance test — in which each section is scored on a scale of 200 to 800 — averaged 502 in reading, 487 in writing and 501 in math.

Those students outperformed the national average in reading (497), while lagging slightly behind in writing (489) and math (514).

Participation in the exam increased by more than 400 graduating seniors last year from the total in 2009-10.

“Increasing the number of seniors that have taken the SAT by 15 percent is significant,” saidKen Bassett,PWCS director of Student Learning. “We take great pride in motivating more students to participate in this college entrance exam.”

In addition, the average score for critical reading achieved by students in six of the 10 high schools in the division exceeded the national average. Those schools were Battlefield (517),Brentsville(518), Forest Park (513), Hylton (504), Osbourn Park (524) and Woodbridge (504).

Overall, students inVirginiaperformed better than the national average in every category but math, where the average scores were 512 in reading, 509 in math and 495 in writing.

TheCollege Boardreports that the SAT is the nation’s most widely used admissions test among colleges and universities, assessing critical thinking skills students need for academic success in college and students’ knowledge in reading, mathematics, and writing.
