Maine GOP says 19 voters cited hotel as address

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Maine Republican Party says 19 people who registered to vote on Election Day 2004 used a Holiday Inn Express in South Portland as their home address.

But a newspaper is reporting the 19 were American medical students who were "permanent guests" because their school on Grand Cayman Island was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The hotel manager told the Sun Journal (http://www.sunjournal.com/state/story/1085801 ) that the students were sent to Maine to continue their studies while their school was under repair.

GOP Chairman Charlie Webster said the 19 voted that day and haven't voted since.

He released his findings Friday as he presses his case for a new law scrapping Maine's same-day voter registration and requiring voters to register at least 48 hours before an election.

A November referendum seeks to reinstate same-day registration.
