Hub City marks 9/11 with church services today

Today is a day in history that most of us will not forget. Ten years ago, thousands died as terrorists attacked our country. Today, we remember those victims and pray for their families.

The city of Crown Point and First United Methodist Church will hold two memorial services at the church, 325 S. Main St. The first will begin at 8:40 a.m. and will include the unveiling of a memorial, the second service will begin at 11 a.m. All are invited.

Timothy Ball Elementary School has announced its Spell Bowl Team: Tim Abbott, Morgan Adams, Madison Berger, Olivia Budzevski, Jessica Davis, Robert Garrison, Jordan Jimenez, Amya Kirk, Zane Linback, Conner Michniewicz, Leeah Thomas, Haley Thornberry, Bella Vaupel, Jessica Waszak and Emily Weilgus. Start your day Saturday shopping for treasures at Boy Scout Troop 45's Annual Garage Sale. Once again the troop will be set up at the south end of the Farmers' Market on South Main Street from 8 a.m. to noon.

While there, stop in at the Old Sheriff's House and Jail to take a tour. Then, travel on down to Sauerman Woods Park, 1000 E. South St., for the Parks and Recreations "Touch a Truck" program. Children of all ages, including the big ones, can touch, climb and sit in some very large vehicles from 9 a.m. to noon. There may even be a visit from the Lake County Sheriff's helicopter. Bring your cameras.

Master storyteller Grant Fitch will tell "The Stories that Became the Movies" at 7 p.m. Saturday at On the Square Sports Academy, 105 N. Court St., Crown Point. Cost is $8, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting St. Jude House. Come dressed as a character from a favorite book that became a movie and have a chance to win a prize.

Children 4 to 10 can bowl the afternoon away as the Crown Point Parks Department is once again offering this popular program. Children will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Sept. 14, at the Super Bowl Inc., 218 S. East St., Crown Point.

There are still a few seats left on the Southlake YMCA''s Sept. 30 bus trip to Wisconsin. Participants will visit Boemer Botanical Gardens and Arboretum then explore the shops in Greendale and the Reiman Visitors Center and enjoy a fish fry dinner. Cost is $75, which includes transportation, garden visit and dinner. Call Debbie at (219) 663-5810.
