Ed Mathews: Space shuttles could go private

When the Space Shuttle Atlantis and its four astronauts returned safely to Earth early Thursday morning, it was a great relief. There were tears when the shuttle landed safely, because it was the last flight of the U.S. space shuttle program. Now the door is open for private companies and other countries to conduct shuttle flights. ... Former South Carolina Sen. John Edwards may have to pay the U.S. Treasury $2.3 million from matching funds that he received for his 2008 presidential campaign. Edwards spoke here several years ago at the annual Manufacturer & Business Association dinner, along with former Sen. Fred Thompson, and was impressive. He's been embroiled in difficulty since then. ... Hopefully, General Electric will renew its foundation program beyond 2012. It expires in June of that year. The grant from the program, which was intended to improve math and science education in the district, has been well used by the Erie School District. ... You have to wonder what has gotten into Tiger Woods. Last week, he fired his longtime caddie Steve Williams, with whom he worked for 12 years. Together, they amassed 72 victories and 13 major championships. Normally, in cases like this, the player and caddy usually send out the same message: "It is time for a change." But Williams, taken by surprise, wondered aloud what is happening to Woods. In 2010, Woods also fired his longtime swing coach. Greg Norman noted that many of Woods' problems seemed to surface after the death of his father, who exercised a great deal of discipline on his son.

In Ireland, a country that is predominantly Catholic, lawmakers have charged that the Vatican has covered up charges against pedophile priests. Irish officials said bishops were instructed not to tell police about pedophile priests, and Vatican officials encouraged them to flout the laws of Ireland. This is going to be an issue for some time. ... Obviously all of the people who patronize Presque Isle Downs & Casino are not from Erie, but those who do come continue to be consistent with the money they bet every week. Erie's casino offers slot machines, table games and horse racing, and it just received approval to open a new poker room within the next few weeks. During the record heat, the air-conditioned casino seemed to do quite well. ... Pro football fans are breathing easier now that it appears that the NFL will have a 2011 season. The people in Canton, Ohio, are not too happy, however, because the annual Hall of Fame game scheduled for Aug. 7 between the Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Rams has been canceled. NFL officials said they made the decision so all of the teams will be on the same exhibition schedule. Free agents, who normally sign with teams in the spring, will be scrambling for jobs over the next few weeks. ... We had Bruce "Bruno" Howell's name wrong in a mention about the Hammermill/International Paper picnic on July 29 at Shades Beach.
