Two-handed bowler makes local history - GreenwichTime

It's nice to know people read this column. My good friend Ned Finney sent me the following story, which I am glad to bring to you:

"Hi Frank. After reading your Sept. 26 article, it occurred to me that a record had indeed been broken in this association. To my knowledge there has never been a two-handed release bowler that has shot a perfect game. That ended when Cody Johnson did it on the last week of Brookfield's Adult Junior League on Aug. 8 with games of 300, 225, 208 for a 733 series. So, unless there is another two-handed bowler in this association that did it already, Cody would be the first. To top that accomplishment, Cody is only 16 years old. What a bowling career he will have with a start like that. But Cody comes from a great bowling family. His brother Zach is just an awesome bowler with numerous high games and series. Unfortunately, he has been so busy with other things that he is unable to commit to a league. That leaves us with Aaron, the boys' father, who I think is a shoo-in for the Hall Of Fame with five 300 games, six 11 in a row, a 299, an 814 series and an almost record-breaking 855 series. What impresses me about the Johnsons is their uncanny ability to adjust to lane conditions rather than give up and blame poor scores on the lanes. Speaking of smart adjusting, one of the best at it, Gary Grant, shot another 300 on Oct. 4 to add to a long list of accomplishments. It's hard to believe that he is not on the list of Hall of Famers."

There is a lot going on this season under the umbrella of the Greater Danbury USBC Association. Here's a little taste:

The Greater Danbury USBC Bowling Association Annual Open and Women's Tournaments will be held on November 5, 6 and 13 at Brookfield Lanes. Nov. 5 squads are at noon and 3:15 p.m.; Nov. 6 and 13 squads at 9:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Entry forms are available at Lore's Lanes and Brookfield Lanes, as well as online at www.greaterdanburyUSBC.org. Walk-in entries are welcome. The Greater Danbury USBC is now accepting nominations for the Hall of Fame. Entry forms are available at Lore's Lanes and Brookfield Lanes as well as online at www.greaterdanburyUSBC.org.The deadline for this year is Oct. 31.The 2012 Hall of Fame Inductees will be installed at the Annual Hall of Fame-Hospice Fundraiser on March 18.

The Greater Danbury USBC is looking for volunteers to help out with several committees. The committees looking for members are: Tournaments, Bowl for the Cure, Fundraising, Hall of Fame, Annual Hall of Fame & Hospice Breakfast, and State Tournament. For many of these committees, the GDUSBC Association is looking for members available to commit to a bowling season which can consist of three to four meetings or more depending on the committee. For the state tournament, they are hosting the event on March 31 and April 1, 14, 15, 21 and 22 and need volunteers in many areas, including check-in, monitoring, substitutes registration, etc. The commitment for this tournament can be for as little as one day to all days of the event. If anyone would like more information or would like to volunteer for any of the committees, please contact Lou Meola Sr. at lcmsr-dba@att.net.

The Greater Danbury USBC is now accepting applications for the Ryan M. Tlasky Memorial Scholarship and the Angela M. Sequenzia Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship requirements and applications are now available on the website at www.greaterdanburyUSBC.org. The scholarships will be awarded at the Annual Hall of Fame-Hospice Fundraiser on March 18.

Hey Ladieeeeeeeeeeeees! (c'mon, some of you must remember Jerry Lewis). Check out this happening at Lore's Lanes in New Milford. On Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon, the lanes will be hosting an Intro to Bowling for ladies only. It is a completely free program with shoe rental included. There will be an hour and a half of bowling with the remaining half hour devoted to breakfast. Don't miss out on the fun. For more info, contact Josh Young at the Lanes.

Further on the subject of Lore's Lanes, the bowling action in the adult leagues so far this year has been impeccable. Check it out: Fred Meyer 710 series; Rose Quint 236 game, 584 series (152 average); Judy Ball 220 game, 572 series (135 average); Josh Lattrell 276 game, 770 series; Steve Neylon 279 game, 754 series; Linda Hopponen 269 game, 656 series; Mike Neal 289 game, 753 series; Mike Ottley 705 series; Rusty Goslin 255 game; Dan McCauley 252 game; Al Hendrick 606 series (79 years of age); Barbara Zagami games of 124-134-124; Charlie Erickson 223 game; Ty Barr 300 game (his first), 752 series; Joshua Lattrell 279 game, 749 series; Joshua Young 288 game, 757 series; Greg Sturges 280 game; Dave Ostermayer 267 game; Lisa DeBetta 697 series; Mike Neal 268 game, 715 series; Anthony Valentine 728 series.

Congrats to Dwight Davis for bowling the 26th perfect game of his career. This one came last week at Brookfield Lanes.

Stewart Schilb has announced that the 2012 version of the Frank Bacon Memorial Strike-a-thon is set for March 18. I think that this is too early in the season -- we still have snow to worry about -- but I also know how difficult it can be to pull this event together. The great Johnny Petraglia is scheduled to come back, though Brunswick has first dibs on him and if they beckon, he must answer. Joining Johnny and Bo Burton will be Kelly Kulick, who returns for the third straight year to grace the lanes

Condolences and prayers to the family of John Hoffman. John, who passed away recently, was a true devotee of the sport of bowling and will be missed by teammates and opponents alike.
