Local report: Watkins wins silver at PanAm Games

Bakersfield's Jimmy Watkins teamed with Michael Blatchford of Cypress and Dean Tracy of Portland, Ore. to snare a silver medal in the men's team cycling sprint Monday at the Pan American Games in Mexico. The trio set an unofficial U.S. record with their time of 44.036.

Watkins also placed fourth in the keirin and fifth in the men's individual sprint.

DENVER -- Gyasi Zardes scored his NCAA-leading 17th goal of the season with less than three minutes remaining to lift CSU Bakersfield to a 1-0 victory over the University of Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer match.

Zardes followed a rebound off Denver goalkeeper Oliver Brown in the 88th minute. Scott Luedtke, whose shot was deflected by Brown, was credited with the assist for the Roadrunners (10-2-4, 6-2 MPSF).

Eric Shannon made three saves for his seventh shutout. Brown finished with five saves for the Pioneers (4-9-3, 2-5-1).

CSUB outshot Denver 13-10, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

The 'Runners will face Air Force at noon Sunday in Colorado Springs.

POCATELLO, Idaho -- Haleigh Haratyk finished with 13 kills and seven kills as the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team was swept by Idaho State 25-20, 27-25, 25-21.

Tika Smith added 11 kills for the Roadrunners (6-16). Danielle Gong had 26 assists, Lisa Bartsch chipped in 13 assists and Lauren Holderman added 11 digs.

Vanessa Muir led the Bengals (12-11) with 12 kills. Karissa Legaux added 34 assists.

GLENDORA -- The Renegades stayed close for a half before falling 3-0 to Citrus College in Western State Conference play.

BC (7-5-4, 3-3-3) managed just one shot on goal, coming from Michele Loera and trailed 1-0 at the break. 'Gades goalkeeper Lauren Ash made three saves in the match.

Citrus (8-6-2, 3-3-2) scored 8 minutes into the match and then added another goal just 59 seconds into the second half.

Erica Rico recorded 46 assists and eight digs as Bakersfield College pushed L.A. Pierce, the state's top-ranked volleyball team, before falling 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21 at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

The Renegades (12-6, 5-2 Western State Conference) lost to the Brahmas (22-0, 7-0) for the third time this season, but won a game against them for the first time.

Rachel Christian had 26 digs and Brittany Smith added 10 kills for BC, which is second in the WSC behind Pierce, the defending state champion.

TAFT -- Chanel Cantere had 20 kills and 11 digs to help Taft College sweep Reedley, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 in a Central Valley Conference volleyball match.

Cina Mauga and Brittany Peterson had five kills and five blocks apiece for Taft ( 8-2 CVC, 12-7), and Kerstyn Randall had 25 assists and 17 digs. Reedley dropped to 4-6, 8-10.
