Beechwood football team limps into NewCath matchup | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

The Beechwood football team has several key players battling injuries heading into Friday's non-district regular-season finale with Newport Central Catholic, including senior quarterback Taylor Davis, who will miss the next two games.

According to Beechwood head coach Noel Rash, Davis suffered a hairline fracture of his collarbone and won't be available until the second round of the playoffs.

"We definitely need him if we're going to make a run at winning a state title," said Rash.

The Tigers (8-1) are ranked No. 2 in the state in Class A.

Rash said sophomore Jason Suchanek and junior Max Nussbaum will replace Davis. Nussbaum is a starting fullback and linebacker, but threw a touchdown pass out of the "Wildcat" formation in last week's 61-13 win over Ludlow.

Senior right tackle Caleb Wheat (sprained knee) is also out for this week's game and the first-round playoff game. Seniors linebacker Joey Staten (ankle) and tight end Corey Cruse (high ankle sprain) are questionable.

CLASS 6A PLAYOFFS: If you believe in comparing scores, consider the following in the area Class 6A District: Boone County, which finished fourth in the district, beat first-place Campbell County on Friday, 37-7; Campbell County beat both Ryle (27-21) and Dixie Heights (50-14), which both beat Boone County.

All four teams have a good chance to win their first-round playoff games, which would then pit Campbell County vs. Dixie and Boone County vs. Ryle in the second round.

VOLLEYBALL HONORS: The Kentucky High School Volleyball Coaches Association has recognized the following area players and coaches:

Region 9: Player of the Year - Heidi Thelen (Notre Dame); Coach of the Year - Becky Houston (Holy Cross).

Region 10: Player of the Year: Taylor Snyder (Newport Central Catholic); Coach of the Year - Vicki Fleissner (Newport Central Catholic).

GOLF WRAP UP: Grant County junior Sarah Kellam earned her way on the all-state team as she accumulated enough points to be one of the top 10 point earners in the state. Also, Pendleton County senior Kristen Smith earned the Forcht Group of Kentucky Sportsmanship Award at the girls' state tournament.
