On Monday night’s episode of, NBC’s a cappella competition, the judges eliminated Kinfolk 9, a nine member, mixed group after their performances of “Price Tag” by Jessie J and “Let It Be” by the Beatles. Both performances received positive feedback from the judging panel, who said their final decision for the night was the hardest they’d had to make so far.
I was lucky enough to speak with Jenilee Reyes, a member of Kinfolk 9, and ask her about the groups experience on The Sing-Off and their plans for the future.
“You have to learn how to be one unit. There’s no individualism in a cappella,” Jenilee said of her experience training for the The Sing-Off . The members of Kinfolk 9 were all solo artists before they came together as a group, so adjusting to the a cappella style was a challenge for all of them. “Everyone was excited to learn how to sing a different way.”
And the group’s training and rehearsals weren’t confined to only their songs. Every episode of The Sing-Off opens with a large a cappella group number, featuring the members of all the different competing teams. The groups spend upwards of three hours a day on just this number. But Jenilee said this was less stressful than their individual rehearsals because it was a chance to get to know the other teams and have some fun with the music. “I still get blown away seeing the opening numbers.” Jenilee said, adding that she’s amazed by how it sounds.
As a fairly new group, Kinfolk 9 faced a lot of challenges. They didn’t have the years of experience some of their competitors boasted. “The only thing I would really change is the amount of time we had to get everyone together,” Jenilee said. But being eliminated from The Sing-Off isn’t the end of the road for Kinfolk 9. “We want to keep moving forward as a group.”
The band is considering adding musical instruments to their performances, but for now they are sticking with a cappella. Recently, they covered Beyonce’s “Best Thing I Never Had,” and Jenilee said they’d like to cover “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People. In the meantime, they’ve created a lot of buzz on The Sing-Off . “It’s pretty crazy. We have a lot of great fans.”
