Here's a little food for thought to help you get over the hump:
- It has been a while since I've seen a team in the Tri-County South Conference that had a chance to make serious noise in the WPIAL Class A playoffs. However, Beth-Center has that chance.
I watched the Bulldogs dismantle Monessen, 46-0, last week and I came away very impressed with B-C's overall team speed, strength and skill.
Quarterback Sal Faieta is the real deal as a double threat, and while the Bulldogs running backs showed speed in turning the corner against the Greyhounds, they also showed some power in breaking tackles.
Defensively, they did a great job of containing anything Monessen tried to get wide on.
Do I think B-C can beat Clairton? Nope. Then again, I think there are a bunch of AAA teams that cannot beat Clairton.
However, it wouldn't surprise me if B-C were the second-best team in Class A, and that says a lot.
- I have tried to let the fact that Ringgold and Laurel Highlands combined for nine touchdowns in the second quarter of the Rams' 62-19 flogging of the Mustangs last week sink in and I always end up just shaking my head.
Then, I realize that Ringgold had TWO touchdowns called back in the quarter and I just simply say, "Wow."
That is some kind of offense and special teams the Rams have there.
- I can't believe we won't hear Hank Williams Jr. sing "Are you ready for some football?" on Monday nights any more.
- One of the best comments I've heard this week was made by a friend about the city of Philadelphia. In obvious notation of the Phillies being ousted from the Major League Baseball playoffs and the Eagles' total collapse in the NFL, he said, "Who knew that it would officially be hockey season in Philadelphia this early in the season?"
Priceless.
- Today's history lesson: What historic high school event happened in the mid-Mon Valley 20 years ago? (See answer at the end).
- Am I the only one so sur-prised that Max Starks, who a week earlier was not employed and hadn't played since last season, was able to after three practices step onto Heinz Field and play nearly picture perfect football against Tennessee?
I kept waiting for him to have a breakdown or a stupid penalty Sunday -- things he had done often enough when he WAS playing every day -- yet those things never happened.
Wow.
- Add Steelers I: Wasn't it only a week ago that the Steelers were being called an old, slow team with little or no chance of making the playoffs?
But after the 38-17 romp over Tennessee, the Steelers are back in the top 10 of most power rankings.
I've been saying for weeks that the NFL season is not a sprint, but a marathon. And one game won't make or break a team's season ... especially in October.
- Add Steelers II: Speaking of "old," Hines Ward didn't look too bad on Sunday, did he?
- Whatever happened to Brandon Isbell?
- I see where Denver head coach John Fox has named Tim Tebow his starting quarterback.
Hmm, I guess that's Fox's way of naming Andrew Luck as his starting quarterback in 2012.
- It doesn't bother me that Todd Graham has his Pitt Panthers off to a 3-3 start this season. After all, he is trying to implement his offense with Dave Wannstedt's players.
That is definitely a recipe for mediocrity -- voila!
Graham deserves time to get some of his own players on the field before his system should be highly criticized.
That said, what does bother me about Graham is his willingness to throw the blame for losses on his players.
After the Panthers were blasted by Rutgers Saturday, 34-10, Graham explained that the Panthers were routed because "the players didn't play hard."
C'mon, coach. Who prepared the team to play that way?
- If Urban Meyer truly wants the Penn State job, I will say a prayer every night that Joe Paterno decides that now is the time to announce his retirement after this season.
Of course, I'd probably say that prayer anyway.
- History lesson answer: Charleroi's Darrell Harding became the WPIAL's all-time leading rusher (at that time) when he rushed for 251 yards against Bentworth to go over 4,900 for his career.
