Kindle Fire sold 95,000 units in preorder sales just the first day of launch. Since then, Amazon is receiving 2,000 preorders every hour or 50,000 orders a day, if website Cult of Android is to be believed. If this pace continues, Amazon will have sold 2.5 million of its Android 2.3 eReader and tablet hybrid before its official release on November 15.
Assuming Amazon manages to achieve these numbers, it would make Kindle Fire the top selling device in first month of sales, beating records of even iPad and iPad 2 that other Android tabs haven’t managed to come even close to. And there’s a high probability of this happening because of Kindle Fire’s appealing price. For $199, customers get the latest Android version even if it’s heavily overlaid by Amazon’s UI, an eReader, access to Amazon’s expansive store (coupled with plenty of great offers from Amazon), music, videos, TV shows, games, eBooks, and apps. It gets better if you are an Amazon Prime customer.
There’s just one thing that could be a pain point on this device, even for mid-range customers – missing Android Market. Amazon has said that it is in talks with Google for the same but there’s no doubt the retailer is focusing on its own App Store. If you have a collection of Android apps, you won’t find it easy to re-download them on the Kindle Fire without Android Market. There are workarounds of course (read this extensive article on androidcentral ) but the straightforward way is out.
Kindle Fire’s hot sales are putting pressure on other tablet manufacturers but not ASUS. Confident in its high sales of ASUS Eee Pad Transformer , ASUS doesn’t plan to reduce the tab’s $400 pricing any further, at least not yet. ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 2 , the quad core successor of the first gen tablet will appear in fall, as planned. This tab will be priced at $500, more than the first model, but still good if you consider the bumped up specs and added 3G connectivity.
Get ready to be spoilt for choice this holiday season.
