BOCA RATON — MagicJack owner Dan Borislow, wearing a white Abby Wambach USA jersey and with a beverage in his hand, stood on the sideline Wednesday night, cheering his team during a pivotal 3-2 victory over Sky Blue FC.
The celebration came just hours after the embattled Borislow filed a motion for a temporary injunction to prevent Women's Professional Soccer from terminating the team.
Despite the controversy surrounding the team, magicJack (7-6-2) was able to create some breathing room in its quest for the third playoff seed, moving one point ahead of Sky Blue (5-7-4) in the WPS standings. The teams were tied at 19 points entering the match.
"This is a really big confidence-booster for us," Wambach said after the team's second consecutive victory. "We have the veterans and the patience as an entire team to pull it out in the end."
Wambach's tone became serious when asked about the status of her team.
"We let the owner deal with that," she said, adding that Borislow sent the team an email briefing them on the situation. "We really have been totally kept out of it. We're focused on playing the game ... Honestly, not one person said anything about anything in the locker room."
After playing in front of sell-out crowds in each of their past four matches, that streak ended with Wednesday's announced crowd of 1,727 at Florida Atlantic University.
Wambach struck early, firing her sixth goal of the season into the left corner of the net five minutes into the game.
Wambach scored her second goal in the 77th minute to give magicJack a 2-1 lead.
Sky Blue's Eniola Aluko scored her second goal of the match seven minutes later to tie it.
Just a minute later, Megan Rapinoe scored the game-winning header off a cross from Lisa DeVanna.
"This team is resilient and handling everything well," Christie Rampone said. "Overall, this team is doing great and we're on the up(swing), which is perfect timing."
MagicJack has two of its three remaining games at home. On Saturday, they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to face the Boston Breakers, which the magicJack beat 4-0 last week at home.
