Southaven offers etiquette school

SOUTHAVEN - Bad manners at the dinner table may no longer be a problem in Southaven since the city is opening up an etiquette class to its youth.

The Southaven Mayor's Youth Council has to complete an etiquette course to be officially recognized by the Mississippi Municipal league so the city is paying the Mississippi School of Protocol and Etiquette $25,000 to bring its course to the Southaven Arena and teach the youth council.

At a Board of Aldermen meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Greg Davis said he asked that the school open up its six-week class to the rest of the city's youth while they're here.

The first 480 students to fill out an application and bring their $105 registration fee will be enrolled in the class.

The classes begin Sept. 15 and will meet every Thursday for six weeks. The class is for ages 7 to 12 and will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The class for ages 13-18 will meet from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Also on Tuesday, the Southaven board said it will begin milling and paving seven streets.

The milling will cost $145,000 and the paving will cost approximately $240,000.

"I do not overlay a street without milling it down, that way we don't wind up with a subdivision where people can't pull out of their driveways without dragging their car," Davis said. "It's more expensive but we're going to fix it right."

The roads are Central Parkway from Tchulahoma Road to the bus bar, W.E. Ross Parkway West to April Drive, Louisa Cove, Bethany Drive, New Point Drive, Booneville Drive from Mississippi Valley to Brookhaven Road and Southcrest Drive for the first 300 feet north to the hospital.
