The No. 15 WSU women’s rowing team held their only home regatta this season, hosting in-conference and in-state rival the No. 7 Washington Huskies at Wawaiwai Landing on the Snake River Saturday.

The Cougs fell to Washington in all six races of the day, and the Huskies regained possession of the coveted Apple Cup Trophy.

In the first race of the regatta, the Cougar varsity eight boat was not able to overcome an early deficit coming into the 1,000-meter and fell to second to place less than five seconds behind the Huskies with a time of 6:43.20.

The second race of the day, the women’s second varsity eight, was a close one. Going into the 1,000-meter, Washington held about a four-seat lead, but the race eventually came down to a photo finish. Video replay confirmed a Husky victory by less than a second.

Despite strong efforts from the second varsity eight boat consisting of Cayla Ravancho, Natasha Ostopovich, Crystal Martin, Mollie McCabe, Liz England, Stephanie Hinkle, Ann Hoag, Sarah Powell and Alison Smith, along with a comeback of about 14 seconds, the Cougars finished behind the Huskies with times of 6:50.13 and 6:49.66, respectively.

The comeback of the second varsity eight boat was the highlight of the entire event, Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said in a WSU press release. LaRiviere said it gives the team hope that their depth is coming around.

The Huskies swept the varsity four event with its A team edging out its B team with times of 7:41.58 and 7:42.67, respectively. WSU’s A team finished with a time of 7:54.1, followed by the B squad, who clocked in with a time of 7:56.4. The Cougars finished third in the second varsity four race with a time of 8:12.31.

In the novice eight, WSU’s crew finished with a time of 7:17.3, six seconds behind Washington, who finished in 7:11.2. The Cougars’ A crew placed second in the second novice eight race with a time of 7:42.0, followed by the B crew with a time of 7:49.5.

The Cougars will have next weekend off in order to prepare for upcoming opponents No. 8 Michigan State, No. 9 Ohio State and No. 14 University of Michigan in Columbus, Ohio, at the Ohio State Invite.
