Doha; 27 April 2011: Qatar Olympic Committee General Secretary H.E. Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, speaking ahead of the 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment which opens in Doha on 30 April, today spoke of Qatar’s great honour in staging such an influential event in partnership with the International Olympic Committee and United Nations Environment Programme.
H.E. Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said: “It is a huge honour and a proud moment for the Qatar Olympic Committee to be co-hosting the 9th World Sport and Environment Conference. The International Olympic Committee and United Nations Environment Programme have developed an influential conference over recent years which has stimulated real discussion and provided thought-leadership to the global sports sector. I have no doubt that this will be the case at this year’s conference, and we are delighted to welcome so many Olympic Family members to Qatar, including IOC President Jacques Rogge, for what we hope will be a stimulating and inspiring three days.
Sheikh Saoud added: “Sustainability and environmental responsibility are crucial in shaping Qatar’s own future. As a nation we are proud of our role as world leaders in sustainable technology and we are already transferring this knowledge and experience into the sporting arena through the use of zero carbon, solar technology that will be used to cool the 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums and training sites.
“Doha’s bid to host the IAAF 2017 World Athletics Championships will use similar zero carbon cooling technology in the Khalifa Stadium if we are successful in our bid. Importantly, we are committed to working with sporting and other organisations across the world to share this technology and help ensure sport can be played year-round no matter what the local climate.”

The 9th World Sport & Environment Conference will take place in Doha between 30 April and 2 May 2011 at the Sheraton Convention Centre. Renowned speakers and experts will shed light on how the mainstreaming of sport can provide inspiring solutions to a greener future.
Under the motto “Playing for a Greener Future”, the Conference is being organised by the IOC in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Qatar Olympic Committee.
The Conference will be officially opened by IOC President Jacques Rogge and distinguished personalities such as the UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner; the Heir Apparent and IOC member, HH Sheikh Tamin Bin Hamad Al Thani; and Chairman of the IOC Sport and Environment Commission, HE Dr Pál Schmitt, the President of Hungary.
Items on the agenda, which will be addressed in plenary and breakout sessions, include:
o How sport can contribute to the 2012 Rio +20 Earth Summit
o Ways of implementing the Olympic Movement’s Agenda 21 at global and local level
o The role of sport in achieving goal 7 (environmental sustainability) of the Millennium Development Goals
o The role of Olympians in promoting respect for the environment
