Bucs hit hard by Monsoon - Press-Telegram

When Mayfair High played host to Bellflower in a Suburban League baseball game Wednesday, it featured teams tied for second place in the standings.

But the game was not even close as the Monsoons routed the Buccaneers 13-3.

Mayfair (9-10, 6-1) pounded out 15 hits. Jordan Aboites had three of them and Kyle Carpenter, Devon Schermahorn, Brad Aune and Erik Humbert had two apiece.

Carpenter, Schermahorn, Erik Humbert, Greg Humbert and Justin Davis all had key doubles.

Bellflower is 12-7 overall, 5-2 in league.

Artesia 7, Cerritos 0: Osbaldo De La Rosa threw a complete-game, one-hitter to lead the visiting Pioneers in Suburban League play. Artesia (4-3 in league) also got three hits and two RBIs from catcher Jeff Gunter.

Bellflower got solid performances from three players, and the result was a 3-1 victory over host Artesia in a Suburban League match. Scores were 25-20, 25-17, 14-25, 25-20.

Tim Windmiller had 11 kills and five blocks; Jed Canlas had 10 kills, five aces, eight digs and three blocks; and Jovani Rojo came through with eight kills, five blocks, six digs and an ace for the Buccaneers (10-11, 6-4).

Mikah Kahawaii of Artesia led everyone with 19 kills. The Pioneers are 3-6 in league.

Julian Avila and Joshua Echevarria, the Nos. 1 and 3 singles players, respectively, both went 3-0 to lead Paramount to a 13-5 San Gabriel

Valley League victory over host Gahr.

The Pirates (19-1, 12-0) won the league title for the third consecutive year, going undefeated each time.

Senior Brandon Taylor came through with victories in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in respective times of 4:39.59 and 10:14.43 to lead Mayfair to a 72-64 victory over visiting Bellflower. The victory gave the Monsoons the Suburban League championship; the Buccaneers were the defending champions.

The score was tied 61-61 with two events left to score. The Monsoons won the mile relay in 3:36.68 and Michael Haskins won the pole vault with a mark of 12-6.

Also for Mayfair (6-0 in league), Stephen Bethley won the 100 in 10.85 seconds. Reggie Randle of Bellflower (5-1 in league) took the 200 in 22.34 seconds.

The Suburban League-champion Monsoons (6-0 in league) capped off an undefeated league campaign with a 94-41 victory over visiting Bellflower.

Kira Orta of Bellflower (4-2 in league) won the high jump and long jump with marks of 5-4 and 16-7, respectively.

Melissa Rivas doubled and tripled and Jessica Torrez hit a home run to lead host Mayfair to an 11-0 victory over Bellflower in Suburban League play.
