POLICE are investigating a group set up on social networking site Facebook which contains lewd gossip and derogatory comments about Campbelltown residents, particularly teenagers.
The site, which Facebook shut down last week, was operated anonymously and allowed users to send in detailed comments about people which would then be publicly posted by the anonymous operator.
Detective Acting Inspector John Edwards from Campbelltown Police said officers were investigating the site after a complaint was made to them.
‘‘There is a Commonwealth Offence of using a carriage service to threaten, harass and offend and it carries a term of imprisonment, Acting Inspector Edwards said.
‘‘I would argue quite a bit of the material on the page would fit that offence.’’
‘‘Obviously it’s up to Facebook because they control that site.’’
‘‘However any member of the community can make a complaint to Facebook and ask them to take that page down.’’
‘‘As a law enforcement agency we can make a request for Facebook to take comments down and remove pages, and that is what has been done.’'
