New England Roundup: Connecticut

Pretty much everyone expected New Canaan’s Conor Hanratty to sign a National Letter of Intent with Notre Dame on Wednesday, but that didn’t happen.

Hanratty didn’t back out of his commitment to the Fighting Irish, but a snowstorm pushed back his signing ceremony by a day. He officially became a member of the Notre Dame program on Thursday.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman played tackle in high school, but is expected to play either center or guard at the college level.

“We liked his tenacity,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. “He really got after people. [He] had an edge to him in the way he played. When I say an edge to him, he had that gnarly kind of demeanor at the offensive line.”

Hanratty gave a verbal commitment to Notre Dame more than a year ago. His father Terry played quarterback at Notre Dame and helped the Fighting Irish win the 1966 national championship. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting following his senior season.

“He’s got a great last name,” Kelly said. “Terry Hanratty –- you may have heard of him. Pretty good player for us here at Notre Dame.”

Ridgefield High School offensive lineman Tommy Jordan and Xavier High School linebacker Graham Stewart each signed with Florida.

Jordan graduated from high school early and enrolled at Florida in January, but then left school and returned home. He committed to Florida while Urban Meyer was still the program’s head coach, and stayed with that commitment after Will Muschamp was hired as Meyer’s replacement.

ESPN rated Stewart as Connecticut’s top recruit. He originally committed to Boston College, but switched his commitment to Florida after he met with Muschamp last week.

The Morgan School wide receiver Nainy Bah signed with Temple, which recently hired Connecticut native Steve Adazio as its head coach. Adazio spent last season as an assistant at Florida.

Two Connecticut recruits –- Berlin running back Max Delorenzo and Avon Old Farms tight end Sean McQuillan –- signed with the University of Connecticut.

Notre Dame-West Haven quarterback Sean Goldrich signed with the University of New Hampshire. Goldrich passed for 1,727 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. He also rushed for eight touchdowns as a senior.

“Sean is an athletic quarterback who possesses a strong arm,” UNH coach Sean McDonnell said. “He is a proven winner that will fit in well in our offensive scheme here at UNH.”

The following is a list of where Connecticut’s top football recruits will play in college:

Shawn Robinson (Trinity Catholic) WR Central Connecticut State University

Kevin Harrigan (ND-Fairfield) DL Central Connecticut State University

Sean McQuillan (Avon Old Farms/Glastonbury) ATH Connecticut

St. Joseph baseball coach Bob Studley announced his resignation last Friday, citing personal reasons.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to coach at my alma mater,” Studley said in a press release. “No one takes more pride in St. Joe's baseball, and I hope that rubbed off on the players.

"The program remains in great shape. The 2011 team will hopefully contend for FCIAC and state titles, and I'll be rooting for them. I love coaching high school baseball and hope to continue to coach in the future but, regretfully, not at St. Joe's this year."

Studley won 110 games in nine seasons as the program’s head coach. He guided the Cadets to the Class M tournament every year except for 2004, and 22 of his former players went on to play baseball In college.

The Platt Technical girls basketball team entered Thursday’s game against Keynor with a seven-game winning streak, and had won those seven contests by an average of 31 points.

Defense has been the key for the Panthers, who beat Whitney Tech 62-14 on Jan. 19 and knocked off Norwich Tech 54-13 on Jan. 18.

Roger Brown has covered high school sports in New England since 1992. He currently covers high school and college football in the Northeast for ESPN/Scouts Inc.
